Part of me wished I was up there cooking, part of me wondered how the hell I would cope without an oven and only basic camp stoves. If the festival stays out east I’ll probably look at staying a little closer next year. There is of course the matter of cost, but well, I think the sleep was worth it! I hear you on the bars, but even a lot of them shut their kitchens around nine. I ended up at Sprocket on Monday, which was pretty good, but I’ll definitely be back to Darby St. There’s that awesome T-shirt shop there. Blackbird something or other? Also what is this Harry’s Cafe de Wheels place? I kept hearing about it, but never saw it…

Along with ‘What happens after yes’ it was the best of the panel sessions. The other highlights are, of course, shenanigan related, being Wriron Chef and the Spelling Bee.

As for your note about the Ibis, the festival has been moving eastwards for a few years now. I used to stay at the YHA and would have to walk the 10 minutes to the PAN Building and City Hall. Now the YHA is always booked out so I’ve started staying at the Oriental, which is near City Hall—only to walk 10 minutes to the Great Northern and the Royal Exchange right near where the YHA is. Bastards.

And food? The only decently priced places I know that are open ‘late’ (ie after 9pm) that aren’t pubs/bars are Harry’s Cafe de Wheels and a couple of kebab shops on Hunter St/Darby St and the KFC on Hunter St. For public holiday Monday breakfast, try the Darby St cafes.
