I like hearing about “the other side”. The side where at least one of the MC’s has some sort of flaw. Be it, as in Brute, blindness in the part of Gray or Brute’s “ugliness”, the average American that is not considered a ’10’.
Wonderful interview and excerpt.
Happy Holidays to you and Mr. Lang.

It’s nice to read about gorgeous characters, but I like to read about more average or flawed ones too. There is more depth in the story to me.

I think it’s fantastic that you’re writing looks at the bigger picture and I can’t wait to read Brute!

I was especially intrigued by the question about conventional attractiveness and escapism in m/m fiction. I understand why some readers love handsome protagonists. (Handsome men? What’s not to like!) However, my personal ideal of escapism includes a little complexity and realism.

I like the idea that love abounds even for men who are average-looking to unattractive. What characteristics attract a partner or lover when the exterior is not the main draw? What makes the character become handsome in the eyes of his lover as they come to know one another?

Finally, I appreciate when the physical attractiveness serves as a catalyst in the story. When, perhaps, the character’s attractiveness becomes some sort of obstacle–either for himself (he hasn’t developed inner beauty, or others think he’s nothing more than a pretty face and chiseled torso) or for his more average-looking partner (insecurity about why he was chosen by the attractive man, whether he can keep him interested, etc.). Essentially, I appreciate when a character’s exceptional attractiveness becomes an effective part of the character development and/or drives the plot in some way.

Perhaps physical appearance is a little less important to me than it is to some others. I’m not sure. However, I find that although two handsome men falling for each other is nice, two complex men falling for each other is way more intriguing!
